typhoid

What is typhoid ?

Typhoid is a severe, contagious and life-threatening disease. It is caused by contaminated food, drinks and water by bacteria called S. typhi which may result in fever with severe complications or even death.

What are its symptoms ?

In the initial stages high fever, persistent headache, abdominal discomfort, constipation, diarrhoea, nasal bleeding, weakness, dizziness and nausea. In later stages, constant high fever, diarrhoea and constipation with variable degree of unconsciousness and even coma in extreme cases may be seen. Typhoid often displays several misleading symptoms similar to gastroenteritis, simple fever, or cardiac diseases thus making it difficult to diagnose.

How is typhoid spread ?

The Salmonella typhi bacteria are disseminated by typhoid patients and carriers in large quantities through stool and vomit. The bacteria then find there way to food, drinks and water through house flies and other insects. The bacteria can survive in soil and water for several months.

Treatment and cure

Treatment of typhoid is with appropriate antibiotics. However even sophisticated antibiotics are proving to be ineffective against resistant strains of typhoid bacteria. As typhoid bacteria is difficult to diagnose and more difficult to treat, PREVENTION is the best remedy.

Prevention

You too can protect yourself and your family by :

1. General precautions
2. Vaccination

General Precautions

Good hygiene and sanitary practices can definitely help to control typhoid. However contamination is still possible.

Vaccination

A single injection of a new generation typhoid vaccine is enough to protect you from typhoid for at least three years.
